Foothills Nurseries is proud of our work and our stock and we feel that our most important asset is you, our customer. Visitors are welcome to our nurseries by appointment only – call to book an appointment for a guided tour of our operations. We are proud to serve each of our customers, from landscape contractors, developers, municipalities, and homeowners, to colleges, universities, and beyond.
Foothills Nurseries has several locations on the east side of Calgary which include 400 acres of field-grown caliper trees (40-150 mm), pot-in-pot 15-gallon deciduous trees, as well as shrubs and perennials. In addition, more land is available to increase our production.
We are growing shade, ornamental, and evergreen trees for landscape purposes. Our trees are suitable for Zones 2 to 4. We follow the “Canadian Standard” for nursery stock grown and sold as outlined by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) and Landscape Alberta.
In an ongoing quest to provide our customers with hardy and versatile plants, we educate ourselves through courses, workshops, and meetings. These are provided through our membership with the national and provincial levels of landscape trades/grower groups. We always strive to add new varieties to our product line-up and to be up-to-date with any new developing trends.
One of these trends was pot-in-pot production which has become quite popular with our customers. We have been continually expanding this area of stock and we now have about 10 acres of deciduous trees growing in 15-gallon pots. These potted trees are a perfect solution to get size-able trees into those hard-to-reach places because the trees can be hand carried instead of requiring a tree spade to dig the hole and a crane truck to lift the tree into the hole.
Also, as part of our continual quest to improve, Foothills is interested in more than just the green of our plant material. The growing concern over the environment and the careful stewardship of it encourages us to develop our own strategies for being green.

Henry Heuver

Arnold Heuver

Blaire Cote
Foothills Nurseries began from the vision and investment of Henry Heuver and grew out of a demand for quality trees for his landscape business. In the early 1970’s, Henry brought on Arnold Heuver who focused on developing the nursery. Arnold and his team grew Foothills Nurseries for almost 40 years. Arnold continues to invest his knowledge and experience into the Canadian Nursery Industry today. In 2000, Blaire Cote bought Foothills Nurseries and grew the land base significantly with the purchase of 2 more quarters of land. Foothills Nurseries continued to prosper with Blaire’s investment and expertise, bringing the infrastructure to what it is today. In 2019, Blaire passed the baton to Josh Poffenroth. Josh and his family are taking Foothills Nurseries on the next leg of its journey. This transition brought an update to the name and look of Foothills Nurseries (FHN) letting both existing and future customers know that the Poffenroths are continuing to build on this incredible legacy, working hard to offer superior quality and service. FHN is committed to grow excellent value plant material that thrives in the northern climate, creating a more sustainable future!
